Opinions of Recent “Anti Piracy” Bills

It seems that people are beginning to organize their discontent over recent bills touted as anti piracy, but are instead anti-internet, anti-speech and dare I say anti American.  These bills negate innovation and drive that which makes America what it is and seek to entrench large monolithic corporate interests with business plans from the Jurassic period, rewarding them for an inability to do the same paradigm shift that most of us completed in the mid 90s and embrace the technologies that have brought down governmental regimes that were also inflexible and monolithic.

In an age when our governments are pushing towards “free trade” and a world wide marketplace, doesn’t it seem a bit odd that the same technology that makes this possible is being vilified as a means to commit crime, and treated with as much suspicion as air travelers?  While small businesses and individuals find themselves removing their shoes and walking through full body scanners to use the web to offer products and services, Hollywood and the music industry act as the TSA in determining who is allowed to ride.

We’ve seen time and time again that laws like the DMCA are abused in favor of accusers.  Legitimate web presences have been yanked off the net at an accusation by many ISPs who disregard the portion of the law that allows users to rebut allegations.  These new laws would further extend that authority, and in some cases criminalize it, while simultaneously chilling innovation.  Should we be a country that rewards those with archaic business models and penalizes its innovators and its people?
